IDS - International Dental Show - 2013 in Cologne

Exhibitions, concerts and readings
to accompany IDS 2013

When the 35th International Dental Show opens its doors from 12th to 16th March 2013, exciting trends and a wealth of innovations will await the international dental world in the halls of the Koelnmesse exhibition centre. At the same time, the city of Cologne will present numerous highlights that add up to a varied and entertaining programme outside of the trade fair halls. Art, music and literature enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of cultural experiences offered by museums, the philharmonic hall and a number of other event venues. Guests who prefer culinary delights and exciting nightlife will also be well served. With around 4,000 bars, breweries, pubs and restaurants Cologne offers tremendous gastronomic diversity. In addition, there are a number of clubs, discos and event spaces in Cologne where it's possible to party all night long. One of these locations is the Halle/Tor 2. That's where the legendary "Strictly Dental Night" event will happen on Friday, 15th March 2013. It will be open exclusively to the dental sector. All of these offerings ensure that IDS participants will have a uniquely rich experience in the trade fair city of Cologne.

Modern masterpieces, subway construction archaeology and world cultural treasures
During IDS 2013 the Museum Ludwig, which is famous for its Picasso and pop art collections, will be presenting the special show "Modern Masterpieces. The Haubrich Collection at Museum Ludwig". This collection was donated to the city by Josef Haubrich, a Cologne native, in 1946. It is considered one of the best collections of Expressionist works in Europe, but it also includes examples of New Realism and other modernist movements. Now at long last, these works can be seen together and their interconnections can be appreciated. The show will include two works that have never been exhibited before. The Römisch-Germanische Museum is presenting the treasures that are being uncovered by the current subway construction work. The exhibition "Time Tunnel. 2,000 years of Cologne History" presents a cross-section of the 2,000-year history of the city of Cologne. Spectacular archaeological discoveries dating from Roman times to the Second World War will be on display. These amazing finds are being unearthed continuously due to the ongoing construction of a new underground line. In the neighbouring city of Bonn, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany will present the "Treasures of the World's Cultures" exhibition. This show will bring together more than 250 unique objects from the British Museum's collections. Works from all over the world and all epochs will provide an overview of more than two million years of world cultural history.

From Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky to Roland Kaiser
Music lovers will also get their money's worth during IDS 2013. On 13th March the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich featuring guest violinist Julia Fischer will perform works by Berlioz, Dvorák and Tchaikovsky at Cologne's philharmonic concert hall. Then on 14th March the Staatskapelle Halle orchestra and the pianist Elena Bashkirova will present works by Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schumann. Works by Beethoven and Strauss will be on the programme on 15th March, when the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest performs, joined by guest violinist Renaud Capuçon. In addition, the famous German singer Roland Kaiser is sure to present a contrasting musical programme when he appears at the Lanxess arena on 16th March as part of his anniversary tour.

Literature festival, Gangster Dinner and brewery tours
The 13th lit.COLOGNE, one of the biggest literature festivals in Europe, will take place in parallel with IDS. From 6th to 16th March over 100 readings and events will take place at theatres and performance locations throughout the city of Cologne. Many of the participants will be nationally and internationally famous artists and authors. They will be bringing literature to life through readings, discussions and stories. Alternately, the Hotel Maritim will host its Gangster Dinner on 15th March for those who would like to combine theatre and crime detection with culinary enjoyment. And let's not forget Cologne's famous Kölsch beer and its breweries! Every evening visitors to the cathedral city can enjoy brewery tours that include Kölsch and Kräuterschnapps (herb-flavoured spirits).

Travel by bus or train at no charge
Visitors and exhibitors participating in the world's largest trade fair for dental medicine and dental technology are encouraged to use public transportation. Remember, an exhibitor ID or an IDS admission ticket is valid for free travel on any part of the Verkehrsbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) transit system. In addition to Cologne, this applies to the whole surrounding area, from Leverkusen to Bonn and from Düren to the Bergisches Land. This means that all the events and locations mentioned here can be reached quickly and at no cost.

IDS, the International Dental Show, is held in Cologne every two years. The event is organized by the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Dental-Industrie mbH (Society for the Promotion of the Dental Industry, GFDI) which is the commercial enterprise of the Association of German Dental Manufacturers (VDDI). The trade fair is staged by Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne.
